On Saturday, August 31, at approximately 2:01 p.m., troopers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 78 westbound at milepost 46.8, Summit, Union County, the location of the roadside memorial for New Jersey State Police Trooper Thomas Hanratty. Trooper Hanratty tragically lost his life at this very spot on April 2, 1992, after being struck by a vehicle while conducting a motor vehicle stop.

Upon arrival, troopers observed Summit Fire Department personnel conducting first-aid on David Neufield, a 38-year-old male from Berkeley Heights. During the crash investigation, suspected CDS was discovered inside the vehicle. Neufield was transported to a nearby hospital, placed under arrest, and charged with driving under the influence, possession of a suspected controlled dangerous substance (CDS), and being criminally under the influence.

The crash caused significant damage to the Trooper Hanratty memorial, a solemn reminder of the daily dangers our troopers face while serving and protecting the public. This incident underscores the importance of safe and sober driving on our roadways.
